ART IN THE GARDEN

Sunrise refracting through droplets of dew and streaky glass, bright coloured glass glowing in the midday sun, reflections and patches of colour cast low onto surfaces and plants in the evening - I love the way ambient light plays on glasswork outside, it adds an ever-changing dimension to a static form.

For this reason glass sculptures can really add drama, colour and a focal point to a garden or outside setting. Married with complimentary colours in landscaping and planting and you have something magical. What better setting to showcase your work than Sir Harold Hillier Arboretum and Gardens in Romsey!

Every year for the past 20 years, with the exception of 2020, due to covid restrictions, Hiller Gardens has run ‘Art in the Garden’ sculpture exhibition. I am delighted that Seaview Studio has 5 pieces of work in the 2021 exhibition alongside 17 renowned artists displaying over 60 sculptures throughout the gardens. Celebrating its 20th year the theme of this years show is ‘Reflection’ with artists interpreting the theme in many ways, displaying new works or carefully curated pieces.

The 1m open ringed steel sphere ‘All seeing’, housing 20 glass Tiffany inspired, stylised peacock feathers with mirror reflective eyes, and the group 3 individual steel and glass peacock feathers were specifically designed and crafted for this event alongside steel fabricator NS Sculpture. We picked the peacock feather not just for its beauty and colour but because the feather has been widely symbolised throughout history to reflect upon many human characteristics such as freedom, beauty, love and wisdom to name a few.

‘Seasonal Reflection’ depicts 20 different stained glass leaves, changing through greens to autumnal colours to reds within its steel ring. Both ‘Seasonal Reflection’ and ‘All seeing’ are mounted on stone plinths adding to their grandeur and height. All the works are designed to patina with the steelwork weathering to a beautiful soft rust which softens the work into the natural environment.
