SUHAILI - Glass Model Retirement Tribute

A legendary sailing boat, for a legendary employee...

In the realm of sailing lore, few vessels hold the iconic status of Suhaili. This legendary sailing boat was made famous by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston's historic solo circumnavigation of the globe and has become a symbol of endurance, adventure, and the indomitable spirit of exploration.

Seaview Studio was commissioned by the team of Haven Knox-Johnston to make a glass model tribute of the illustrious Suhaili which was recently presented to Tony Malkin, marking his retirement from the business. The team wanted something special and unique for their dear colleague who had been with the developing forms of HKJ since 1982. Crafted with meticulous detail, this scale model sits on its mahogany driftwood plinth with inscribed message from the team.

Suhaili's fame rests primarily on her historic journey during the 1968-1969 Sunday Times Golden Globe Race, a grueling solo circumnavigation race. Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, then a relatively unknown sailor, set out on this ambitious voyage aboard the sturdy 32-foot Bermudan ketch, Suhaili. Battling treacherous seas, unpredictable weather, and solitude for over nine months, Sir Robin defied the odds and became the first person to sail solo and non-stop around the world. In 1987/8 Tony assisted Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, with refitting the legendary yacht Suhaili for the OSTAR (Original Single-Handed Trans-Atlantic Race).

The story of Suhaili and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston's historic voyage continues to inspire sailors and adventurers around the world. From her humble origins to her place as an icon of maritime achievement, Suhaili's legacy endures as a testament to the human spirit's quest for discovery and adventure on the open seas.

The glass model of Suhaili captures the essence of this historic vessel in detail. The craftsmanship of Seaview Studio shines through, reflecting the passion for nautical artistry and precision.

Tony Malkin, having sailed on Suhaili many times and having such close involvement, the boat holds many fond memories. Receiving this symbolic gift, represents not just the culmination of a successful career but also a connection to the spirit of adventure and resilience that Suhaili embodies. The name Suhaili means 'He who is a trusted companion'. Indeed, very apt for a well loved team member! As he sets sail into retirement, the glass model serves as a reminder of the challenges overcome, the dreams pursued, and the enduring legacy of a legendary sailing boat.
